Southern Dominican Friars Severely Affected by Hurricane Katrina - Homes and Ministries Lost
The Dominican have have a long history of ministry in the South. Along with the thousands of families, both rich and poor, our churches, provincial offices, friars and priories (residences for our friars) in New Orleans have suffered greatly from Hurricane Katrina and a few weeks later by Hurricane Rita.
Two of our churches, our two Priories and our provincial office building have suffered major damage as a result of flooding and looting. Like the thousands of other New Orleans residents affected by this tragedy, we await the day we can return and begin rebuilding.
Our priories outside the New Orleans region have been called upon to receive and care for our displaced friars. All this has placed a significant burden on our provincial resources. We need your help. More Information
- For more information, click here and read a letter from Fr. Marty Gleason, the Prior Provincial
of the Southern Dominican Province.
- Read a detailed account of the damage experienced by the friars of the Southern Province.
- One of our friars, Fr. Chrys Finn, OP has written a first hand account of his experience as a Katrina evacuee. Click here to read his story.

We Need Your Help to Rebuild We need your help in rebuilding our homes and our headquarters in New Orleans. Like so many of the displaced, the friars living in New Orleans have lost all their clothing and personal effects. As they await the estimated six months to one year before they are able to return to their homes and ministries in New Orleans they will require financial assistance to help with their medical insurance and living expenses. Although insurance will assist with some of the rebuilding costs, the Province will nonetheless need more resources to rebuild. Our local priories are helping as much as possible, but their resources are stretched to the limit.
We have set up an emergency relief fund through our Priory and Novitiate in Irving Texas. Pleae help us continue our ministries in New Orleans and the Southern United States. Send your contribution to:
